Lord Mayor of Chester and Chair of Cheshire West & Chester Council to lead local Acts of Remembrance

The Lord Mayor of Chester, Councillor Razia Daniels, invites residents to join her at Chester Cathedral on Sunday 10th November at 10.15am, as she leads the city’s Act of Remembrance.

Remembrance Sunday was originally instituted to remember those lost in the First World War, but today services and events across the borough commemorate the contributions of British and Commonwealth military, as well as service men and women from all conflicts. 

The Lord Mayor of Chester said:

“At a time when the world is again blighted by conflict and unrest, it is important that we all come together, to honour and remember those who have been killed or injured and who are dealing and facing conflict today.    Chester has been a garrison city for centuries and it is proud of its military history and Remembrance Sunday is a fitting opportunity to say thank you to our brave service man and women past and present for their sacrifices and commitments.”

The Chairman of Cheshire West and Chester Council, Councillor Bob Bisset said:

“Remembrance Sunday gives residents of our borough an opportunity to pay their respects to all our military personnel who have made sacrifices for their country.

“It is our chance to give thanks and pay tribute to them and their families and I would encourage everyone across the borough to go along and support their local Act of Remembrance; details are on the Council’s website.”

Across the borough:

A Remembrance Sunday event will take place in Winsford at the newly located War Memorials from 10.45am. This will be the first Remembrance Sunday event to take place in the new town centre civic square outside Winsford Library where the town’s two war memorials and memorial benches have been refurbished and relocated.

Residents and visitors will benefit from improved lighting and increased space around the memorials which have been installed at surface level to provide better access for all. The relocation of the war memorials is part of the Council-led regeneration of Winsford town centre, the biggest investment in the town centre shopping area since the 1960s.

Northwich has a Remembrance service at St Helens Church 9.30am followed by an act of remembrance at the cenotaph on Church Road. After this there will be a parade to Memorial Court for light refreshments.

In Ellesmere Port at 10.45am wreaths will be laid at the cenotaph by civic leaders, representatives of the emergency services and armed forces, representatives of youth organizations and guests. Following the service, there will be a 10-minute march towards the library, onto the access road and towards the civic hall.

There are services in Frodsham at St Laurence Church (9.45am) followed by a wreath laying ceremony and at Frodsham War Memorial, Overton Hill (10.30am).

There will be a parade from Neston Royal British Legion to the Parish Church (2.35pm to 3pm) followed by a wreath laying service at 4pm at the War Memorial within the church grounds
