Friday night action in the Cayzer Shield 1st round saw Fender FC and West Kirby Thirds face off in a thrilling end-to-end encounter. Fender had Ben Morris netting a double, while Ash Power also converted a penalty. Moreton responded with three goals of their own to send the game to penalties, where Fender goalkeeper Ian Thurgil played the hero, saving a West Kirby penalty. This allowed Oscar Sargent to slot home the winner, with the shootout ending 5-4 in Fender’s favour
On Saturday, Moreton extended their lead at the top of the CWFL Queensferry Premier Division to four points with a narrow 2-1 win over Handbridge FC. Ryan Bradley scored for Handbridge, but Moreton had Josh Hulmston and James Broadbent on target to secure a vital three points.
In the CWFL Olympic Trophies Championship, Waverton’s title hopes took a hit as they suffered a 1-0 defeat to Ellesmere Port Town U21s, with Dylan James scoring the only goal of the game.
In the CWFL Tarvin Precision Vets Division Two, Winsford Vets moved up to third place, closing the gap on leaders Great Float vets and Birkenhead FC Vets, who were both occupied with cup games. Liam Goulding led the way with a fine hat trick, while Ricky Billinge also scored in Winsford’s 4-2 victory over Chester Nomads FC Vets.
In the Doug Johnson Vets Cup second round, ten-man Great Float Vets took Higher Bebington Kelma Vets all the way to penalties after a goalless draw, but they ran out of steam in the shootout, with Kelma emerging 4-2 winners to progress to the quarter finals. They will now meet Queens Park Vets this coming Saturday.
Christleton UDA made their youthful energy count in the CWFL P3plant Life Members Cup second round, defeating Birkenhead Vets 4-0. Goals from Andrew Drossos, Sam Tenwalde, Austin Bumo, and Landon Murphy secured the victory.
Waggon & Horses also advanced to the next round with a 5-2 away win over Upton JFC Reserves. Tom Berry and Joe Bartley scored for Upton, but Harley Bennion was the star of the show, netting four goals. Luke Jones also found the net, with Waggon now set to face Mersey Royal Vets in a repeat of last year’s final.
Upton JFC Thirds progressed with a solid 2-0 win over Hoole Rangers, with Jackson Winning and Joe Hall on target. Meanwhile, Lache made light work of their game against Waggon & Horses, securing a 4-1 victory to also advance.
