Cheshire West and Chester Council is supporting Carers Week 2026, taking place from 8th to 14th June, to raise awareness and recognise the incredible contribution all carers make, and highlight some of the challenges they can face.
A carer is someone who provides unpaid support to a family member, friend or neighbour who could not manage without their help due to illness, disability, mental ill health or addiction. Every day, unpaid carers play a vital role in supporting people across Cheshire West and Chester, helping them to live safely and well.
This year’s Carers Week theme is Building Carer Friendly Communities. It focuses on the importance of creating places, spaces, services and communities where carers are recognised, understood and supported in everyday life. Whether at home, at work, in education, in health services or in the community, carer friendly communities help ensure carers are valued and able to access the support they need.
The theme also reflects Cheshire West and Chester Council’s vision to supporting people to live healthy, happy and independent lives in the place they call home through partnership working with carers, residents, partners and communities.
As part of Carers Week, the Council will be lighting up several key landmarks across the borough in blue and white, including Chester Town Hall, Eastgate Clock, Newgate, Ellesmere Port Library and Wyvern House, to show support for unpaid carers and help raise awareness of the important role they play.
If you look after someone and need advice or support, local help is through our commissioned services including Better Together for Carers and the Community and Cheshire Young Carers, which offer information and advice, emotional support, financial assistance, wellbeing activities and carer breaks.
