As part of this year’s National Garden Scheme, the stunning garden of The Birches, Grove Road, Mollington, Chester (CH1 6LG), will be open from 12 midday – 4.30pm on Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th July.
The half-acre garden is the passion of Martin Bentley and Colin Williams and includes bee-loving plants. Colin, an experienced bee keeper, has hives from which honey will be on sale. This year, there is a new meadow.
Delicious traditional homemade tea as well as marmalade, chutneys and honey will be available to buy. In addition, there will be a book and bric-a-brac stall. Proceeds from this event will be given to the Samaritans.
The garden comprises a fragrant ‘Night Garden’ with pale and white herbaceous borders, while the back garden is split into distinct and interesting areas – a koi and wildlife pond; two large herbaceous borders plus a meadow with tropical border and a fernery. There is also an orchard with hens and bee hives, a vegetable garden and wildlife stream with bog plants and sunken garden. The garden is level, with lawns and pathways to most areas.
Martin Bentley said:
“We welcome everyone – from gardeners looking for some new ideas to people who simply enjoy taking in the peace and tranquillity of the garden. Our homemade teas are always a great hit with people who enjoy a traditional English afternoon tea, featuring cakes, cupcakes and savouries.”
Colin Williams, said:
“Bees are a vital part of a healthy natural environment and I am keen to encourage more beekeepers. I would welcome anyone who wants information on how to start beekeeping or who wants advice about how to make small changes to their garden that will encourage bees.”
