The Aspray Chester Deeside Dragons clinched a thrilling victory to lift the 2024 Welsh Cup in Cardiff on Saturday night.
Despite a shaky start, falling 4-0 behind in the first ten minutes, the Dragons fought back to close out the first period with two goals, reducing the gap to 4-2. Regaining their momentum in the second period, they scored four more goals while Cardiff Fire managed only one, giving the Dragons a 6-5 lead. The Dragons came out firing in the third period, scoring four quick goals to build a 10-5 lead before the Fire called a timeout. Although Cardiff Fire rallied with three unanswered goals to close the gap to 10-8, Deeside struck back to make it 11-8. Despite a late surge from Cardiff, bringing the score to 11-9, the Dragons held on to secure the win and claim the Welsh Cup.
Club GM Shaun Bebbington celebrated the victory, stating:
“This win means everything to the club, the community, and Welsh ice hockey as a whole. It shows the strength and passion we have at Deeside, and it's a testament to the hard work of everyone involved, from the players to the fans. It's not just a trophy; it's a symbol of what we can achieve together and a boost for the sport across Wales.”
He also expressed gratitude to Cardiff Fire for making the return of the Welsh Cup so special and showcasing the sport with their competitive spirit. Fans can catch the Deeside Dragons and the Welsh Cup at their next home game on Sunday, 6th October, against the Sheffield Scimitars. With a 5:15 PM face-off and doors opening at 4:30 PM, it's a must-see event for all supporters eager to celebrate the Dragons' triumph.
