Residents urged to help prevent wildfires

Residents and visitors are being urged to take extra care outdoors and help protect Cheshire West and Chester's communities, parks and countryside from the risk of wildfires following the recent hot, dry weather.

The appeal follows national concerns about increased wildfire risk and comes as dry ground and vegetation can make it easier for fires to spread quickly.

A cooler forecast and a chance of rain do not remove the risk of wildfires.  Vegetation remains dry, and it only taken one careless action to start a fire.

Cheshire West and Chester Council is reminding people that disposable barbecues and the lighting of fires are already prohibited in areas covered by the Council's Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO). Breaching the restrictions could result in enforcement action and a maximum fine of £1,000.

The Council is encouraging everyone to take simple steps to reduce the risk of accidental fires, including:

  • Not using disposable barbecues in restricted areas
  • Not lighting fires in parks, open spaces or countryside locations where they are prohibited
  • Disposing of cigarettes responsibly and ensuring they are fully extinguished
  • Not lighting campfires, using fireworks, or undertaking any other outdoor activities involving naked flames.
  • Reporting fires immediately by calling 999

The Council’s Cabinet Member for Community Safety and Neighbourhood Pride, Councillor Stuart Bingham, said:

"Recent wildfires elsewhere in the country have shown just how devastating these incidents can be, with some communities seeing homes damaged or destroyed.

“During prolonged hot and dry weather, even a small spark can quickly spread. That's why we're asking everyone to take simple precautions and follow local restrictions to help protect our parks, countryside, wildlife and communities."

"Together we can help protect our communities and prevent avoidable fires."

The Council is working closely with partners and will continue to promote wildfire prevention messages throughout the period of increased risk. Communications activity will support awareness of existing restrictions and encourage safe outdoor behaviour.

Residents can find out more about Public Spaces Protection Orders on the Council’s website and follow the Council's social media channels for the latest updates and safety advice.
