Nearly 66,000 speeding offences were recorded on Cheshire's 20mph and 30mph roads, between January 2023 and March 2026, according to new Freedom of Information (FOI) data.
The figures provided by Cheshire Constabulary show 65,640 offences were recorded across lower speed roads during the period, including drivers caught travelling at speeds of up to 81mph in a 30mph zone and 44mph in a 20mph zone.
Here's how recorded offences varied year on year:
30mph roads
18,321 offences in 2023
21,657 offences in 2024
21,318 offences in 2025
3,721 offences between January and March 2026
20mph roads
344 offences in 2023
102 offences in 2024
160 offences in 2025
17 offences between January and March 2026
The roads with the highest number of recorded speeding offences in 30mph zones were:
A56 Hoole
A41 Upton by Chester
A56 Preston Brook
Ben Welham, motoring expert at Marshall Motor Group, said:
“20mph and 30mph limits are typically found in more built up areas, where pedestrians, cyclists and other road users are more common.
“Even small increases in speed can significantly reduce reaction times and increase stopping distances, which is why lower speed limits are often used around residential areas, schools and busy urban roads.
“Speeds such as 81mph in a 30mph zone are an extreme example, but even smaller increases over the speed limit can put lives in danger, which is why it’s so important to stay within the law.”
