It’s cup competition for Chester FC Women this weekend as they face a tough challenge against Premier Division outfit Tranmere Rovers Women in the first round of the Argyle Sports Plate at Helsby Community Sports Club.

The Blues made it six successive wins in all competitions on Sunday with a convincing 5-1 win against local rivals Warrington, a game that saw Chester score four second half goals and move up to 4th place in the league. Martin Fitzsimons’ will be hoping his side can carry their good form into Sunday’s encounter and the belief that they can cause an upset against the premier side.

Sunday’s opponents Tranmere currently find themselves in 5th place in the table having won six of their fourteen games so far in the league this season, They come into this weekend’s game having lost their last three games in a row and with only one win in their last six outings in the league. That being said, sitting two leagues above Chester, Tranmere will provide a stern test for the Seals and will show a true reflection of their progress made over the last few months.

Manager Thoughts

“The camp is flying at the minute. We don’t talk about games; we talk about challenges. Every week it’s about the challenges that lay ahead that week, weather that’s in the opponent, or where we’re playing and we talk about how were going to overcome those challenges. We expect Tranmere to cause us problems we’ve not faced yet this season. And that’s excited”.

“As mentioned over recent weeks, it’s the squad that’s given us the wins, not one individual. When everyone’s playing well you feel fearless, and we’ll do our best to take that into this weekend. We’re looking forward to the test, and regardless we’re going to enjoy the it. It’s probably seen as something of a local derby due to the history between the men’s teams, which no doubt will give both teams the etc 10%. We’re hopeful that we’ll get some fans down to Helsby. We've seen the edge they can give you in games when we’ve played at the Deva and we’re confident it will be a good advert for women’s football”.
