Despite the large numbers of attending fans from both sides, Wednesday’s Macclesfield v Chester Derby concluded with only one arrest.
Over 3200 home and away fans attended the Leasing.com Stadium on the evening of Wednesday 29th April to watch Macclesfield Football Club take on Chester FC in the National League North play-off.
A comprehensive police operation was rolled out across Macclesfield and the areas surrounding the stadium to ensure that attendees had a safe and enjoyable evening, with mounted and drone units from Lancashire, West Midlands and GMP deployed to support Cheshire colleagues.
For the most part the game passed by without incident, with officers swiftly responding to a handful of instances of minor disorder following the conclusion of the game.
A 24-year-old man was also arrested during the match.
Superintendent Simon Parsonage, who oversaw the operation, said:
“The policing of large-scale events, such as the National League North play-off that that occurred yesterday, requires careful planning and communication between police and partner organisations, to ensure the match runs smoothly and everyone can enjoy the game.
“With over 3200 fans including nearly 1100 away fans travelling to the match which was itself being live streamed, the spotlight really was on Macclesfield and our officers who were in attendance. Other than a handful of small incidents which were quickly responded too, and the arrest of one individual, an all-round friendly atmosphere was maintained.
“I would like to thank all of our officers on the ground including colleagues from West Midlands, Lancashire Greater Manchester Police for their support. I also want to thank the vast majority of fans in attendance for their support in keeping everyone safe from kick off to the journey home after the final whistle.”
