Ellesmere Port Market customers will soon be able to see the completed first phase of the refurbishment works which will transform the market for customers and traders alike.
To enable traders to move to new locations within the refurbished area at the start of the Phase Two works, the market will be closed from Monday 9 to Wednesday 11th February, except the cafés which will remain closed until Monday 16th February.
When the market opens on Thursday 12th February, the entrance from the Port Arcades shopping centre will also be reopened as well as retaining access from the car park.
Councillor Nathan Pardoe, Cabinet Member for Inclusive Economy, Regeneration and Digital Transformation said:
“Thank you to the customers, market traders and staff who have supported Ellesmere Port Market throughout the first phase of refurbishment works.
“It’s an exciting time for Ellesmere Port Market, with the second phase of works beginning in early February including new public spaces, seating, cycle parking and landscaping. As with the first phase of works, Ellesmere Port Market will remain open to customers, with customers able to visit and support their favourite traders.”
The £8m refurbishment works have been carefully planned to allow traders to continue to trade whilst part of the market is closed off to allow the works to be carried out safely and to minimise disruption.
The market improvements include a new building façade, photovoltaic solar panels on the roof, new toilets, refurbished stalls, seating, improved layout and public WiFi, plus a new flexible events space will be created in the Flea Market area. Externally there will be a new al fresco area and landscaping along with cycle parking and seating.
An additional twenty replacement blue badge spaces have been provided to the rear of the market while work takes place (there is signage around the market giving directions), and some parking spaces have been temporarily removed during the works.
The refurbishment works are currently expected to complete in late summer when the entire market area will reopen.
The Ellesmere Port Town Centre regeneration project is funded by the government’s, Ministry for Housing, Communities and Local Government.
