Council shows support for Black Lives Matter and the struggle against inequality

Following the death of George Floyd in America, Cheshire West and Chester Council will illuminate iconic landmarks in Chester purple for the evening next week to stand together in solidarity with everyone fighting racism, discrimination and inequality.

Cheshire West and Chester Council continues to work with our partners, including the police, to stand up to racism throughout the borough and promote a society where communities and cultures can be seen, heard and supported to stand up to racism. The shocking footage of entrenched racial inequality in America demonstrates how vital it is to commit to action and put an end to all forms of hate against Black and other communities.

The Town Hall and other Council buildings will be lit, in a purple light, in memory of George Floyd and to show our support to those struggling against oppression, including the Black Lives Matter movement.

Councillor Paul Donovan, Cabinet Member for Democracy, Workforce and Localities, said: “The arrest and death of George Floyd will have left many of our residents feeling shocked and angry. We stand in solidarity with those fighting the injustices faced by Black communities. We are committed to ending discrimination and will not tolerate racial inequality in our borough, in our communities and we stand against it across the world.”
