One of Chester's oldest sporting institutions celebrated its 125th anniversary with a spectacular day of Roman-themed festivities inspired by the city's historic past.
More than 130 golfers took to the fairways as members of Chester Golf Club came together on Saturday to honour the club's rich heritage, before an evening celebration transformed the clubhouse into a fitting tribute to Chester's Roman roots.
Founded in 1901, Chester Golf Club has been part of the city's sporting landscape for 125 years. To celebrate the occasion, the club looked to the history that makes Chester unique, embracing a Roman theme throughout the anniversary celebrations as a nod to the city's world-famous heritage.
The day's centrepiece was the CXXV Deva Victory Celebration Competition, an anniversary AMAM event with a Roman twist, where a total of 136 golfers, competing in teams of four, enjoyed a memorable day on the course, combining competitive golf with celebrations worthy of the landmark occasion.
The celebrations continued into the evening as members and guests gathered for a special 125th anniversary dinner. An Italian-themed buffet paid homage to Roman culture, while two Roman Centurions welcomed guests to add an extra special touch to the occasion. The festivities concluded with a Motown performance from Andy Kayne, ensuring the anniversary was celebrated in style.
Men's Captain Nick Stark said:
“Celebrating 125 years is an incredibly proud moment for Chester Golf Club. Very few clubs have the privilege of reaching such a significant milestone, and it was fantastic to see so many members come together to celebrate everything that makes our club so special.
“Our Roman-themed celebrations were the perfect way to recognise the unique history of the city we call home. Chester's heritage is known around the world, and we wanted our anniversary to reflect that while celebrating the friendships, traditions and sense of community that have defined our club for the past 125 years.”
Lady Captain Sandy McDonough added:
“To be Lady Captain during our 125th anniversary year is a real honour. There was such a wonderful atmosphere throughout the day, with members embracing the celebrations both on and off the course.
“The anniversary has given us the opportunity to reflect on the generations of members who have shaped Chester Golf Club into what it is today, while also looking ahead with great excitement to the future. It was a truly special day that everyone involved will remember for years to come.”
A lasting legacy of the anniversary has also been created with the installation of an intricately carved wooden wolf behind the 13th green. Inspired by the wolf on the club logo, the sculpture will remain a permanent feature of the course for members and visitors to enjoy for generations to come.
Chester Golf Club’s anniversary celebrations have not only honoured the club's proud past but also reinforced its place at the heart of the local community. After 125 years, the club continues to thrive, offering an enjoyable test of golf, lasting friendships, best-in-class hospitality and a warm welcome to members and visitors alike.
