Successful joint operation strengthens taxi safety standards across Flintshire

Taxi drivers in Flintshire were found to have high levels of compliance with licensing laws and regulations in a successful joint operation carried out by Flintshire County Council, North Wales Police and the DVSA.

‘Operation Cargo’ saw licensing officers conduct roadside inspections of taxi and private hire vehicles alongside police colleagues, with some vehicles taken to an agreed location for additional checks by DVSA officers. This was the first time the three organi-sations had worked together on a single operation.

A total of 21 vehicles were stopped and inspected in county-wide checks carried out over the course of the day. Officers reported a broad level of compliance, with only mi-nor issues identified.

DVSA provided advice for tyres approaching the legal limit, while licensing officers offered guidance on issues such as missing first aid kits and no-smoking signs.

The operation aimed to ensure that licensed vehicles and drivers were meeting both their licensing conditions and wider legal requirements, helping maintain public safety and confidence in the county’s licensed fleet.

It coincided with National Licensing Week, an annual campaign showcasing the collab-orative work of licensing teams, police and partner organisations to protect the public and uphold high standards across licensed industries.

Councillor Ted Palmer, Flintshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways, As-sets and Public Protection, said:

“These checks help ensure that residents can travel with confidence, knowing that licensed taxis and private hire vehicles in Flintshire con-tinue to meet the standards expected of them.

“I am pleased this operation found high levels of compliance and thank the drivers in-volved for their cooperation.”

Sergeant Emma Birrell of the North Wales Police Roads Crime Unit said:

“Taxi drivers must follow specific legislation to ensure that both their vehicles and drivers are road-worthy and sadly, we are seeing some fall short.

“Any offence is enforced accordingly, and we will be continuing checks throughout the year in partnership with Flintshire council. 

“It is very important that anyone visiting town and city centres has assurance that their safety is of utmost concern when they use a taxi.

 “This operation further highlights the emphasis that we place on community safety – we want people to come and enjoy and then get home safely afterwards.”
