Cheshire Change Hub Clients Successfully Lose Weight and Reverse Type 2 Diabetes

Cheshire Change Hub, who form part of Brio Leisure’s health and wellbeing offer, are celebrating the successes of their clients.

Vicky Taylor lost a total of 10 stone since joining Brio in January 2020 and Terry Hancock lost 8 stone and reversed his diagnosis of Type 2 Diabetes since joining in April 2017. Both clients continued to receive support and guidance from the Cheshire Change Hub throughout the lockdown periods. Their Health Referral Advisor kept in contact with all clients through phone calls and motivated them to continue with their exercise and healthy eating regimes remotely whilst the centres were closed.

Vicky Taylor was referred to the Exercise on Referral programme with Cheshire Change Hub in January 2020 and has since gone on to achieve amazing results for her physical and mental health. Vicky believes the Brio service helped her massively – at first, she could only manage 2.5 miles on the treadmill, but only a year later she had the confidence and motivation to complete a half and full marathon. With the continued support of Brio’s Northwich Memorial Court team, Vicky is hoping to continue to lose additional weight on top of the 10 stone she has already lost. Vicky hopes to complete more marathons in the future.

Vicky said: "I can walk a lot easier, and my life has changed for the better. I am very grateful for all the continued support I have received from Cheshire Change Hub and the gym."

Terry Hancock was referred to the Cheshire Change Hub by his GP after being diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes, weighing 21st 7lb. Since joining the Exercise on Referral Programme at Northwich Memorial Court, Terry has found new ways to exercise and eat healthily with the guidance of Brio’s experts. He frequently enjoys their Aqua Fit classes and uses the gym five times a week. All this activity helped Terry lose 8 stone and reverse his Diabetes diagnosis. He thanks Brio and the Cheshire Change Hub for giving him a new life.

Terry said: “I feel much fitter now with fewer aches and pains and my breathing is easier. Thanks to all the staff at Brio for helping me achieve my weight loss and become healthier. I now weigh 13st 6lb!”

Siobhan Fife, Health and Wellbeing Manager for Brio Leisure, said: “I am absolutely thrilled for Vicky and Terry, the progress they have made since joining us in Brio is fantastic. I wish them all the best as they continue with their health and wellbeing journeys.”

Elly McFahn, Brio’s Managing Director, said: “Vicky’s and Terry’s extraordinary achievements during a worldwide pandemic are testament to their determination and motivation, even though the leisure industry went through periods of closure with each of the lockdowns.  Brio’s role as a health and wellbeing provider locally has never been more important than it is now in the aftermath of the crisis. We are here for anyone who needs our support to lose weight, get out of the house again and build lost confidence, and can provide reassurance that our services are Covid secure as we continue to work closely with Public Health to ensure every aspect of our operation keeps customers safe.”

The recently published ‘Life in Our Years’ report carried out by the UK Active research institute in partnership with EGYM and published on 29 June, highlights the importance of creating an inclusive environment in leisure centres for people aged 55+. With clients who fall into this category, such as Terry, Brio ensure that their programmes are accessible both within their centres and also remotely. The sessions focus on building strength to avoid injuries and also allow for social interaction to boost confidence, heling people have fun whilst being active.
