Chester to Mark 25th Anniversary of 9/11 with Civic Service of Remembrance

The Lord Mayor of Chester will lead Chester civic commemoration at Chester Town Hall Square on 11th September 2026 to mark the 25th anniversary of the terrorist attacks of 11th September 2001.

The service will bring together residents, community groups, faith representatives, civic leaders, emergency services and invited guests to remember the 2,977 people who lost their lives, including 67 British citizens, and to honour the courage and sacrifice of the firefighters, police officers, emergency responders and all those affected by the events of that day.

The commemorative event will begin at 1.40pm around the Town Hall flagpole and will include addresses from the Lord Mayor and emergency services representatives, a two-minute silence, prayers and a wreath-laying ceremony.

As part of the service, those attending will also remember Steve Morris, who was born in Chester in 1970 and was among those killed in the North Tower of the World Trade Center. His story serves as a reminder that while the attacks took place thousands of miles away, their impact was felt in communities across the world, including here in Chester.

The Lord Mayor of Chester, Councillor Margaret Parker said:

The commemoration reflects the Lord Mayor's civic theme for the year, "Harmony in Our Communities and Homes", recognising the importance of bringing people together across generations, faiths and backgrounds. Following the service, guests will be invited to take part in an official photograph before moving into the Town Hall for refreshments.
