Cheshire Road Safety Campaign returns for the autumn

The Cheshire Road Safety Group is launching its annual autumn road safety campaign, encouraging everyone who travels on Cheshire's roads to take extra care as darker mornings and evenings return following the end of British Summer Time.

The partnership brings together Cheshire West and Chester Council, Halton Borough Council, Warrington Borough Council and Cheshire East Council, alongside Cheshire Constabulary, Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service and National Highways, all working together to reduce the number of people killed or seriously injured on Cheshire's roads.

As daylight hours become shorter, visibility is reduced and road conditions can become more challenging. The campaign reminds drivers, pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists and equestrians to take simple steps to stay safe and be seen throughout the autumn and early winter months.

Throughout October and November, road safety officers and partner organisations will be delivering community engagement events and educational sessions in schools across Cheshire, offering practical advice, safety information and activities designed to help people stay safe on their journeys.

This year's campaign launches with public engagement events in Halton on Monday 26 October and Chester on Wednesday 28 October, where road safety representatives will be available to share advice, answer questions and provide free safety resources.

Councillor Karen Shore, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Environment, Highways and Strategic Transport at Cheshire West and Chester Council, said:

"Every year, people are seriously injured or lose their lives on our roads, and the darker autumn and winter months can bring additional risks. That's why this campaign focuses on simple steps that can help everyone stay safe."

"Whether you're behind the wheel, walking to school, cycling to work or travelling through our communities, taking a moment to think about visibility, speed and awareness can make all the difference. Together, we can help reduce collisions and make Cheshire's roads safer for everyone."

Councillor Paul Nolan, Executive Board Member for Environment and Urban Renewal at Halton Borough Council, said:

"We're pleased to once again support this important campaign and welcome residents to our launch event in Victoria Park. Road safety is everyone's responsibility and these events provide a great opportunity for people to pick up practical advice that could make a real difference. By working together across Cheshire, we're helping to create safer roads and safer communities for everyone."

Key safety messages are:

  • Be visible when walking, cycling or riding, especially in low-light conditions.
  • Take extra care around schools and during busy drop-off and pick-up times.
  • Check vehicle lights, tyres and windscreens regularly.
  • Allow extra time for journeys and adapt driving to changing weather and road conditions.
  • Look out for more vulnerable road users and share the road safely.
