World Book Day fancy dress swaps in borough libraries

Following very successful previous events, Cheshire West and Chester Council’s Library Service is again offering fancy dress swaps this year, to help save money and the environment in good time for World Book Day in March.

The Council’s Cabinet Member for a Fairer Future, Councillor Lisa Denson, said:

“Seeing primary school children dressed up as book characters for World Book Day has become a familiar sight each March. However, with growing financial pressures and the need to reduce waste, limiting new purchases makes more sense than ever.

“Several of our libraries are accepting donations of fancy dress costumes up to World Book Day. These will then be made available for anyone who needs a costume. It’s a great way to share the fun—helping families save money while also supporting efforts to tackle the climate emergency.”

All donated clothes must be clean, in good condition and suitable for primary school-aged children. Any items which are not claimed by World Book Day will be either donated to charity, kept for library use or sent for recycling.

Participating libraries are: Barnton, Frodsham, Hope Farm, Little Sutton, Wharton, and Winsford.  There will be lots of class visits to libraries throughout the week and the library teams always look forward to seeing the wonderful costumes that children come in with.

2026 is the National Year of Reading so libraries are expecting even more school classes and children to come in than usual both for World Book Day and throughout the year. If you’d like your school to visit, please contact your local library.
