Weaver Words Literature Festival on stage in Frodsham

Weaver Words 2023, Frodsham’s sixth literature festival, opens this Friday (28 April), offering eight days of fantastic events, speakers, workshops and a Pop-up Poetry Wall.

Five events are already sold out, including the Poet Laureate Simon Armitage, a Bronte afternoon tea and a Literary Cruise along the River Weaver, but there are still a few tickets remaining for some fantastic speakers, including TV drama legend, Sir Phil Redmond (Grange Hill, Hollyoaks and Brookside - Thursday 4 May), Calendar Girls writer Tim Firth (Sunday 7 May) and a fabulous two woman play ‘Fly Me: Mrs Sage and the Mile High Club’ on the evening of the Coronation (Saturday 6 May).

The first weekend bursts into life with ‘Great Expectations’, a brilliant one man show by Gerald Dickens, Charles Dickens’ great great grandson, on Saturday 29 April, 7.30pm at Frodsham Community Centre.

And earlier in the day, Cheshire author Frank Melling will be passing on top tips for Successful Self-Publishing in an afternoon session at the community centre, starting at 2.30pm. He also opens the festival the night before on Friday (28 April) with stand-up comedy on bikes and beer on stage at a local craft brewery, Chapter Brewing (sold out).

Enjoy a wonderful evening of poetry and music from Word Weavers poets Andrew Rudd and Sarah Clare Conlon and violinist Daniel Axworthy on Friday 5 May. And everyone is invited to get creative and write a small poem on a postcard for displaying on the public Pop-up Poetry Wall in the community centre.

A series of fascinating seminars and events will explore a diverse range of topics, from Welsh poet R.S.Thomas and Turning History into Literature (Thursday 4 May) to recent political threats to the British Constitution, ‘Bonfire of the Decencies’, with London University politics professor Andrew Blick (Sunday 7 May).

And there is a chance to brush up on your own creative writing skills. A small number of tickets are still available for a Howdunit crime writing workshop by Martin Edwards (Sunday 7 May) and a delightful walk in Hob Hey Wood with poet Jean Atkin (Wednesday 3 May).
