The Archbishop of York, Stephen Cottrell, will be in Chester on Tuesday 2nd June, ending with an evening event in the cathedral.
Archbishop Stephen will begin the day meeting Civic Leaders before walking to St Peter’s at the Cross Church.
School pupils will be at Chester Cathedral from 9am participating in workshops about St Werburgh and pilgrimage, before leaving to meet with Archbishop Stephen at St Peter’s, and then gathering at the Shrine of St Werburgh before walking back to the Chapter House at 11.45am.
They will then have a singing session until 12.30pm – Archbishop Stephen and children will learn ‘The Pilgrim Way’ song with Nick and Becky Drake from Songs for School who have written this for Faith in the North.
In the evening at 7pm, there is an Everyday Pilgrimage event with Archbishop Stephen and Bishop Mark at Chester Cathedral – all are welcome to join.
The theme for Faith in the North this year is Pilgrimage, and there is an increased appetite for this with many people, those with faith or none.
Faith in the North has produced resources which invite children and young people to explore the Christian theme of pilgrimage and to discover the lives and legacy of the Northern Saints.
The Pilgrimage & the Northern Saints resource pack includes:
-
Pilgrim Pathways – A set of six collective worship sessions for KS2 or KS3.
-
Light from the Past, Hope for the Future – A new RE resource exploring the lives of eight Northern Saints.
-
The Pilgrim Way – A new song designed to engage children with the theme of pilgrimage.

-
Pilgrim Explorer Cards – Interactive cards to help children explore a church building.
-
Lifepath – An experience for junior school pupils, offering the opportunity to explore the Christian faith through the ‘life path’ of a well-known historic Christian.

Alongside this, churches are encouraged to sign up to become a Pilgrim Place, a welcoming, peaceful, safe space which offers time to relax and reflect.
Nearly 400 churches have signed up so far, mainly in the north of England.
