Police cars damaged as officers dealt with anti-social behaviour in Ellesmere Port

Police cars were damaged while officers attended reports of youths throwing fireworks in the Bunbury Green area of Ellesmere Port on Bonfire Night.

The Ellesmere Port Local Policing Unit ran a generally highly successful operation aiming to prevent anti-social behaviour throughout the Halloween and Bonfire Night period.

But Cheshire Constabulary has been left with a £1,180 repair bill after two police cars were damaged while officers attended reports of a group of youths throwing fireworks in a public place.

One of the cars had its windscreen cracked by a firework as the officers searched for offenders on foot.

The other suffered damage to its wing mirror, bonnet and rear nearside window after officers had got out of the car to assist a Police Community Support Officer who was having fireworks thrown at her by a group of youths.

So far four arrests have been made in relation to the incidents attended in the area on Bonfire Night.

Detective Inspector Nigel Parr, of the Ellesmere Port Local Policing Unit, said: “Between around 7pm and 7.30pm on Bonfire Night officers were dealing with reports of a group of youths throwing fireworks and displaying disorderly behaviour in the Bunbury Green area of Ellesmere Port.

“When officers located the youths they had missiles thrown at them and when they returned to their cars they discovered that two of the vehicles had been damaged.

“This type of violent and dangerous behaviour will not be tolerated.

“We are committed to doing all that we can to tackle such behaviour and we will continue to work with the community and partner agencies to ensure that Ellesmere Port is a safe place to live and work.
