Member of the Welsh Parliament urges people to show their support for Wrexham’s bid to become UK City of Culture.

Sam Rowlands, Member of the Welsh Parliament for Fflint Wrecsam, is calling on his constituents to take part in a major community conversation next week.

Mr Rowlands, a keen supporter of the city’s bid, is encouraging people to attend a free one night only event at the Butcher’s Market on Monday May 18 from 6-8pm to learn more about the Wrecsam City of Culture Bid 2029.

He said:

“I was absolutely delighted when it was announced in March that Wrexham was one of nine locations to make the longlist to host the prestigious title in just three years time, the only Welsh city to do so.

“Earlier this year I was fortunate enough to have been shown around the city by Amanda Evans, Culture Bid Director, and saw for myself what work is taking place to promote Wrexham. I was very impressed.

“Over the last few months Wrecsam2029, Wrexham Community & Culture Trust’s official campaign movement, has been very busy engaging with local people and organisations and next week they will be able to share their findings so make sure you don’t miss out on an opportunity to influence what happens on your doorstep.

“The whole bid is a tremendous opportunity to continue to promote and showcase all that Wrexham has to offer. Winning the UK City of Culture will have huge benefits for the city and indeed for the whole of North Wales, creating jobs, driving investment and delivering long-lasting benefits, putting Wrexham and North Wales on the international radar.

“As the only Welsh city in the running for this prestigious title I will also be urging the Welsh Government to get behind this wonderful chance to celebrate the uniqueness of Welsh culture and put the whole of Wales in the national spotlight.”

The free one-night-only event will share the findings gathered through 35 workshops, more than 1,000 conversations, and six months of discussions asking Wrexham what matters from art to sport, nature to nightlife, heritage to hospitality, and the big theme of Play for everyone.

The evening of immersive performance and participation, hosted by award-winning Wrexham-based theatre company Dirty Protest Theatre, will explore what people across the County Borough have said they want from culture as Wrexham bids to be UK City of Culture in 2029.

Tickets for The Hear All About It event are limited and bookable on Eventbrite.
