Chester's Grosvenor Museum is inviting residents and visitors to join a programme of special events to celebrate its 140th anniversary this October Half Term.
Since opening in 1886, the museum has welcomed generations of visitors, preserving and sharing the rich history of Chester and Cheshire. The anniversary celebrations will bring together history, creativity, learning and community activities for all ages.
Many of the events will take place in the museum's newly created Hub, a welcoming space for events, meetings and creative activities. The former museum shop has been transformed into a flexible community space and is already home to a range of regular groups, including a Café Crafts and a Book Club.
Museum staff have also thanked Premier Plants in Ledsham, who are generously donating indoor plants for the Hub, helping create a calm and relaxing environment for visitors and staff.
A range of special anniversary activities are planned during the Half Term holiday, including:
- Saturday 24 October - Chester Archaeological Society conference
- Monday 26 October - Meet & Make in the Hub with a special birthday theme
- Tuesday 27 and Wednesday 28 October - free Halloween crafts in the Hub throughout the day
- Thursday 29 October, 10.30am to 3.30pm - Victorian Birthday Party in the Roman Chester Gallery
- Thursday 29 October, 2.30pm to 4pm - birthday-themed Café Crafts session
- Thursday 29 October, evening - Introducing... Movie Night at the Museum featuring the classic film The Red Shoes
Visitors can also enjoy Museum Highlights Tours running from Tuesday 27 October to Friday 30 October at 11am, offering an opportunity to discover some of the museum's most fascinating objects, collections and stories.
Councillor Lisa Denson Cabinet Member for a Fairer Future (Poverty, Public Health and Museums), said:
"The Grosvenor Museum has been an important part of Chester's cultural life for 140 years and these celebrations are a wonderful opportunity to reflect on its remarkable history while looking ahead to its future.
"We are proud to offer a varied programme of activities that will appeal to families, history enthusiasts and anyone who has a connection with the museum. I would encourage residents and visitors alike to come along and be part of this special milestone."
