One of Wrexham's top orchestras is set to launch its ambitious new season of concerts with a landmark performance of the one of the most influential classical pieces of music of the twentieth century.
Wrexham Symphony Orchestra will perform Igor Stravinsky's "The Rite of Spring" at William Aston Hall on Sunday 8th November at 3.30pm. Renowned for its revolutionary rhythms and vivid orchestral colour, it is best known as part of the soundtrack to Disney's Oscar-winning "Fantasia". When it was first performed in Paris in 1913, such was the audience's excited response that it caused a near riot. Conducted by Mark Lansom, the concert will also include a performance of Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No.4 featuring star guest soloist Adam Davies, and "Jubilee Dances" by William Mathias.
The orchestra's new season will continue with a Christmas concert on Sunday 13th December at 3.30pm when there will be a special festive performance of "The Nutcracker". Most recently staged by the orchestra to great acclaim in 2024, "The Nutcracker" returns to William Aston Hall by popular demand and will be narrated by Amanda Northwood with musical direction by Bedwyn Phillips.
Other highlights include "WSO at the Movies" in February featuring some of Hollywood's greatest film scores including Star Wars, Superman, Casablanca and Back To The Future. The season continues in May with Tchaikovsky's "The Sleeping Beauty" when Bedwyn Phillips will once again be the conductor. The new season concludes in July with "Elgar's Enigma" which will feature music by Gustav Holst, Richard Strauss and Edward Elgar’s Enigma Variations, including the ever-popular Nimrod. The orchestra will be joined for this concert by conductor Richard Howarth and popular Ukrainian soprano Khrystyna Makar.
Speaking about the new season. Matthew Ellis, the Chair of Wrexham Symphony Orchestra said:
"We are delighted to be back in the rehearsal room following our summer break. Our new season has something for everyone, from the dynamic "The Rite of Spring" and the wonderfully festive "The Nutcracker" to music from the Movies, the iconic "Sleeping Beauty" and music by Elgar and Strauss, we can't wait to welcome audiences, old and new, to the William Aston Hall for this spectacular new season."
