GLADIATORS, GEEGEES AND GLORIOUS SUNSHINE - ROMAN DAY AT CHESTER RACECOURSE

Over 17,000 racegoers enjoyed Roman Day at Chester Racecourse today [30th May 2026].

It was an action-fuelled day of family-first fun. The Open Course was buzzing with excitement as children and families enjoyed thrilling Roman stunt shows, gladiator boot camps, interactive learning experiences with Camp Curiosity, themed crafts, Roman artefacts, and activities in partnership with the Chester Heritage Festival.

Historical spectacles aside, the quality of horse racing was second to none. The first race of the day, The Chester Roman Day Maiden Fillies’ Stakes, was claimed by leading trainer and jockey Andrew Balding and Oisin Murphy riding Machadadorp. Virtuous Star and David Nolan took the win on The British Stallion Studs EBF Novice Stakes.

The KingKabs Selling Stakes was won by Everatease, while The Louise Keegan Handicap Stakes was claimed by Believitanduncan.

Speedy and stunning Lexington Jet not only won the Virgin Bet Handicap Stakes, but was also crowned Best Turned Out.

Another win and Ride of the Day for Oisin Muprhy in The John Smith’s Fillies’ Handicap Stakes as he flew to victory with Ruby’s Angel, and the final race of the day, The General Elliot Croft Handicap Stakes, went the way of Folk Pageant and Hector Crouch.

Local charities Koala NW, Cheshire Young Carers, and NW Superkids were all in attendance, supported by the MBNA and Chester Racecourse partnership.

The next chance to visit Chester races will be the upcoming Summer Social Weekend on Friday 12th June and Saturday 13th June. And for those after more family-focussed fun, don’t miss Family Funday on 2nd August, a day packed with entertainment for all ages.

Chester Race Company, established in 1892 operates three racecourses across England, Scotland and Wales. Racing began at Chester Racecourse in 1539, making it the oldest active racecourse in the world, a status verified by the Guiness Book of World Records. The course generates over £65m of local economic impact and employs over 20% of the local recreational workforce.
