Work on new active travel routes start in January to provide improved walking, wheeling and cycling links connecting Ellesmere Port railway station into the heart of the town centre.
A cycle route will be introduced along Cromwell Road, with speed humps and signs with a new 20mph speed limit. A new roundabout will be installed at the junction of Cromwell Road and Wellington Road North to provide a safer environment for cyclists using the road to get to the Market.
The walking and wheeling route along Whitby Road will be made accessible with a new signalised pedestrian crossing at the Whitby Road / Cromwell Road junction, as well as improved side road crossings along Whitby Road. This includes re-aligning kerbs and providing new tactile paving and dropped kerbs at locations that have no facilities.
During the works there will be temporary road closures and traffic management:
- Grange Road, 3-way traffic lights from 05/01/2026 to 16/01/2026
- Whitby Road, one way closure, from 20/01/2026 to 10/04/2026
- Victoria Road, road closure, from 09/04/2026 to 10/04/2026
- Exeter Road, lane narrowing, on 09/02/2026
- Cromwell Road & Wellington Road North, 4-way traffic lights from 13/04/2026 to 21/04/2026 and road closures (except for access) on Sundays
Councillor Nathan Pardoe, Cabinet Member for Inclusive Economy, Regeneration and Digital Transformation said:
“Improvements to Cromwell Road mark the start of the third phase of the transformation of Ellesmere Port town centre, including much-needed upgrades to the Cromwell Road / Wellington Road North junction. Some disruption is inevitable with work like this, but we’ve done everything possible to minimise this.
“The regeneration project is the biggest investment in the town centre in decades, made possible by Cheshire West & Chester Council. It includes the extensive work to Ellesmere Port Market that will be completed next autumn, and sites along Coronation Road are being prepared for much needed quality new homes for local people along with the new site where the old Civic Offices were.
“Careful planning has ensured Ellesmere Port Market and the wider town centre can remain open throughout this project. Please continue to support your favourite traders and businesses as work progresses.”
The first phase of the £8m market transformation is nearing completion, traders will be moving back into their new stalls allowing work to move to the remainder of the market. The second phase will allow the re-opening of the Port Arcades entrance to the market.
The Ellesmere Port Town Centre regeneration project is funded by the government, Ministry for Housing, Communities and Local Government through a £13,378,478 allocation.
