Final rehearsals are underway as a Mold-based theatre company prepares to stage a double bill of plays at Denbigh's Theatr Twm O'r Nant.
Described as a double bill of high tension, drama and comedy presented under the title of 'Love and Anger', the plays, 'Some Kind of Love Story' by Arthur Miller and 'Anger Management' by Robert Scott are set to be staged by Suitcase Theatre at the popular Denbigh venue from Thursday 17th - Saturday 19th October at 7.30pm.
Inspired by 50s film noir, Arthur Miller's play 'Some Kind of Love Story' is something of a hidden gem. Set in the bedroom of Angela, a schizophrenic call girl, the story unfolds as her ex-lover Tom, a private detective, returns for crucial case information. But Angela knows revealing her secrets could mean losing Tom, the 'love of her life.
Speaking about the play, director Andy Jordan said:
"Despite being one of the most acclaimed and prolific playwrights of the 20th century, Arthur Miller’s 'Some Kind of Love Story' is almost unknown and rarely performed. The play is less of a story and more of a cat and mouse game between the two characters. The intricacies of their pasts and the differences in their personalities collide with force during the hour of their lives we witness on stage. For me as a director, much of the staging and visual decision making is given by Miller. His script is heavy with stage direction. The directing challenge comes in guiding the actors, Si Kneale and Ruth Huish through understanding and creating such complex characters. Angela is a melting pot of multiple personalities. We are never sure of exactly who she is. Tom is stoical, his patience continuously put to the test. Their relationship is equally symbiotic and parasitic. In Ruth and Si, we have two highly capable, thinking, actors who have more than been up to the challenge. It has been a real pleasure to work with them."
'Anger Management' is a short comedy written by award winning playwright Robert Scott about five people who are forced into therapy after losing control of their tempers. Can the well-meaning Dr. Clarke reform this reluctant group through role-playing their outbursts, or will they prove too much for the good doctor to handle?
The play will be directed for Suitcase Theatre by John Owen who said:
"Anger Management is about a group of dysfunctional individuals who are told to attend anger management sessions to understand what makes them angry and how to control it. Dr Clarke, the calm stress-free anger management consultant, decides the best way to do this is via the medium of Drama asking each individual to act out what makes them angry, which they do with varying degrees of success. Robert Scott leaves much of the direction up to the director, with very little in the way of stage direction, so it was a challenge to decide what he wanted and to try and establish the characters in a short space of time. It is a simple set with just a few props so again the actors must work hard to convey the scene. We hope you enjoy 'Anger Management' alongside 'Some Kind of Love Story' as we present this double bill of two plays with their contrasting themes of love and anger."
