Here's the latest results from the Chester and Wirral Football League...
Friday night’s Doug Johnson Cup action set the tone for a high-scoring weekend as Crew Vets and Eastham Vets played out a frantic 4-4 draw. Mike Jeffs was the standout for Eastham with a hat-trick, supported by a Mike Burrows strike, but braces from Daniel Massey and Daryl Scarlett ensured the tie went the distance. In the end, the dreaded penalty shootout decided it, with Crew keeping their nerve to win 3-1 and secure their spot in the next round.
Elsewhere on Friday, Clarence climbed back into third in the Olympic Trophies Championship with a convincing 6-2 win over Frodsham Park JFC. Ben Ryan was the star of the show as he helped himself to a hat-trick, while Reno Robinson, Billy Beasley, and Joel Hunter all found the net. Frodsham’s replies came via Matt Hayes and Andy Dutton.
Saturday’s schedule was heavily disrupted by the weather, but the Vets Division One top-of-the-table clash went ahead on astro. Sefton Vets went top of the table with a 5-1 win over rivals Capenhurst Vets . Man of the Match Karl Bergvist was the difference-maker from the right wing, bagging a hat-trick, with Adam Millington and Jamie Hay also on target. Joshua Russell grabbed the lone goal for Cape.
In the Championship, Higher Bebington Kelma took a massive step toward the title by beating rivals Great Sutton Reserves 4-2. Bryan Layfield’s double, alongside goals from Jake Bernard and the evergreen Shaun Burgess, puts Kelma four points clear at the summit with just three games to play. Tom Boulton and Omar Hoyle replied for Sutton.
In the Premier Division, Whitegate were the only winners in a rain-thinned programme, beating Hoole 2-0 thanks to Matthew Cann and Anthony Reid.
Goals were flying in across Vets Division Three. Frodsham swept Waverton aside 6-0, with Kev Valentine and Ray Whyard both scoring twice, while Michael McClusky and Stephen Jackson rounded off the scoring. Vineyard Vets went even further, dismantling Upton Vets 9-0. Tommy Carroll and Tony Langrell both netted doubles, joined on the scoresheet by Anto Corser, Jason Rigby, Dave Favager, John Ellis, and Carl Orok.
Division Five saw a hard-fought 3-3 draw between Vaults Vets and Tarporley Vets, the latter's goals coming from a Walter Yates brace and Rowan Lythgow. Port Sunlight Vets kept up the pressure at the top with a 5-2 win over Frodsham Vets; Steve Quarry and Joe Alkins both scored two, with Mark Mosey adding the fifth. John Boote and Nick Foxen scored for Frodsham.
In the Life Members Cup, Cheshire Vikings Vets put up a spirited fight against top-flight Higher Bebington Kelma Vets but eventually fell to a narrow 4-3 defeat. Jon Phomprett’s double and a Michael Large goal weren't quite enough to offset strikes from Eamon Buahalfia, Shaun Burgess, Greg Bearsley, and Chris Corkhill. The shock of the round came as Division Four’s West Kirby Vets thumped Division Two side Ellesmere Port Red Lions 5-0, while Handbridge progressed with a 4-2 win over Upton JFC Reserves, inspired by a Will Hodgson hat-trick.
