Local MP, Samantha Dixon, has secured £2 million a year for ten years for the people living in Blacon.
As part of the new Pride in Place Programme, Blacon has been selected as one of over 330 area across the country to pioneer a new way of deciding how public money is spent on local projects.
This Programme is about learning what gives local people pride in their area and empowering them with funding to deliver improvements to boost that pride.
The money can be used for anything from improving local parks to fixing up empty buildings and high streets – but it will be up to residents to decide what to do.
The fund relies on people in Blacon coming together to submit ideas for how to spend the £20 million total.
Residents in Blacon should soon be receiving a survey from Samantha through their doors and are encouraged to fill it in to share their ideas about the improvements they want to see in their community. This is a first step in a process of community engagement for this programme.
MP Samantha Dixon, who campaigned for the funding, said:
“Local people know their area better than anyone else and that is why the Government has decided to do this differently. This is our chance to improve our area by making the big decisions for ourselves – not by letting other people make them for us. It is a pot of money intended to make our area an even better place to live.
“Blacon has a great sense of community spirit and individuals who go above and beyond for local people.
“Getting an extra £2 million a year, for ten years, is a massive investment in Blacon. Residents can choose to spend it on a wide range of different things and all ideas are welcome. I want to encourage everyone in Blacon to get involved and share their ideas through the survey. I’m really looking forward to hearing what people come up with. This is our chance to show what people in Blacon can do!”
