An inspiring eight-year-old boy is taking on an incredible challenge to raise funds for the hospital he has received years of care from.
Charlie Perry-Hargreaves has spent much of his young life on the Countess of Chester Hospital's children's ward due to his asthma and felt inspired to do something special to give other young patients a wider choice of toys and games on the ward.
A keen walker, Charlie and his mum Vicky go on weekly long walks together, so Charlie decided to set himself the ultimate challenge of walking 20 miles along the North Wales coastal path, starting in Prestatyn in aid of the Countess Charity.
Charlie, from Ewloe, said:
Every penny he raises will buy new toys, games and crafts for youngsters on the children's ward to enjoy during their stay in hospital.
"I have been in the hospital quite a lot and sometimes it can feel a bit boring, so I decided to give some to the children who have to stay in even longer than me."
"I want to raise as much as I can but my target is £500 so I hope they can buy lots of new toys or crafts and pens for the children to play with.
"I like walking and am happy my mummy is doing this with me. She has done lots of charity walks in the past so she is good at walking too, and is very proud of me."
Explaining more about Charlie's special connection to the Countess of Chester Hospital, Vicky said:
"Charlie has been in the children's ward several times for his asthma and the days were long.
"He realised some kids have to stay even longer so he wanted to make their time in hospital a little easier.
"The hospital and staff have been a big part of Charlie's life since birth, and it means so much to us to be able to give something back. A thank you never seems enough,”
"I think he likes the fact he's now joining me in fundraising. He's such an amazing little boy."
Karen Flewitt, Children’s Unit Manager at the Countess of Chester Hospital, added:
“We are incredibly touched by Charlie’s kindness and generosity.
“His fundraising efforts will bring so much joy to the children here on the ward and the new toys will really help brighten their days and bring comfort during their time in hospital.
“We are so grateful for Charlie’s support in making the ward a brighter place.”
