Countess of Chester Hospital unveil brand new images of how new Women and Children’s Building will look

New images of what the Women and Children's Building will look like when it’s completed in summer 2025 at the Countess of Chester Hospital have been revealed today by the Trust.

The artist’s impression pictures, which have not been released to the public before, give a visual insight into how the £110m three-storey facility will look when it opens in two years' time.

Construction work on the project is expected to continue to progress quickly, with the help of two large cranes that can currently be seen in the hospital grounds.

The new building will replace the existing Women and Children's Building that has been in use since 1971, and all maternity services will move into the new development, resulting in increased capacity and extra modern rest spaces for patients, staff and families.

It will also include a new ground floor delivery suite, two Obstetric theatres and a first floor maternity ward with 24 single bedrooms and specially designed en-suite bathrooms to promote accessibility.

The Countess of Chester Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is a large 550-bed district general hospital, which provides a full range of acute and specialist services on the Countess of Chester Health Park and an intermediate care service at Ellesmere Port Hospital.

The current Women and Children’s Building was built in 1971 – 12 years before the main building first opened and 13 years before the hospital was officially named the ‘Countess of Chester’ on 30 May 1984.

It is currently based in a 1970s building constructed out of reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete, which has been identified as at risk of structural issues and needs to be removed by 2025. RAAC is no longer used in construction.
