The weekend's CWFL action was dominated by the last sixteen ties of the Life Members Cup.
Holders Mersey Royal Vets began the action on Friday night by hosting Birkenhead Vets. Royal quickly established control, reaching the interval with a commanding 3-0 lead. The scoring began with David Bowe, followed by a stunning 35-yard chip from Lee Davey that proved to be the pick of the goals, and a Mike Burke penalty. Ian Sheridan put the result beyond doubt early in the second half before Shaun Parrington rounded off the scoring.
Saturday’s action brought a seven-goal thriller as Chester Nomads Vets edged out Premier Division side Newton Athletic. Newton found the net through a Dan Christian brace and a Jack Williams effort, but Nomads secured a brilliant victory with a double from Danny Andrews, along with efforts from Simon Andrews and Gareth Edwards.
Upton JFC Reserves made light work of Clarence FC, securing a 4-0 win with goals from Matt Jones, Hal Senturk, Az Rolo, and Danny Evans.
A tightly contested match between Handbridge and FC Farndon ended 2-2 in normal time, with Sol Meredith and Matt Bird scoring for Handbridge, and Adam Morris and David Mitchell replying for Farndon. Handbridge ultimately progressed to the quarter-finals after winning the resulting penalty shootout 5-4.
Higher Bebington Kelma Vets stormed to a 3-0 half-time lead against rivals Capenhurst Vets courtesy of a Mark Jones brace and an Anton Jolley goal. Capenhurst mounted a spirited second-half fightback with goals from Ian Armstrong, Chaney Lloyd, and Simon Thelwell to force penalties. Kelma keeper Terry Cairns was the hero in the shootout, saving two penalties as his side triumphed 3-0 to advance.
Ellesmere Port Red Lions defeated league rivals Neston Nomads Vets 3-1, with Gary Davidson in fine form, bagging a brace. A Ste Armitage effort added to their tally, while Liam Jeacock netted Neston's consolation.
Cheshire Vikings Vets also moved into the quarter-finals with a 3-1 victory over Nags Head Bunbury Vets, Michael Large led the charge with a brace, and Alan Teece completed their scoring.
In league action, Whitegate extended their lead at the top of the CWFL Queensferry Sports Premier Division to five points with a 3-2 victory over Cestrian Alex. Will Reid was the star man with a brace, and Darren Fox also chipped in with a goal. Jack Appleby and Charlie Jones replied for Cestrian.
Finally, Sefton Vets climbed to second place in the CWFL Tarvin Precision Vets Division One after a 3-1 win against Crew Vets. A Jamie Hay double and an Eamon Price goal secured the points, with Matt Doughty scoring Crew's consolation.
