Successful first deployment of Live Facial Recognition in Chester city centre

Cheshire Constabulary has completed its first deployment of Live Facial Recognition (LFR) technology in Chester city centre.

The deployment took place on Thursday 5th March and marked the first time the LFR van has been used in Cheshire. Officers, alongside colleagues from Greater Manchester Police, spent the day speaking with residents, visitors and business owners, explaining how the technology works, outlining the strict safeguards in place, and answering questions from the public.

The day focused on public engagement, demonstrating how the technology supports local policing when it comes to safeguarding vulnerable people and identifying suspects or wanted individuals.

Throughout the deployment, the system processed over 34,000 faces, and in line with national guidance, biometric data belonging to members of the public, who were not part of a pre-approved watchlist, was automatically and immediately deleted.

Chief Inspector Darren Griffiths, who oversaw the operation, said: 

“This first deployment was all about engaging with our communities and being open about the technology we use.

“It was really encouraging how many people took the time to speak with us, ask questions and see the LFR van in action.

“The technology alerted officers only when necessary and demonstrated how LFR can be used in a targeted and proportionate way. This learning will help shape how we use the technology going forward, particularly during major policing operations and events where it can provide an additional layer of safety for the public.”
