Sam Rowlands MS blasts continued saga over reverting speed limits back to 30mph from 20mph

Sam Rowlands, Member of the Welsh Parliament for Fflint Wrecsam, says there is still anger and frustration over frequent changes to default speed limits.

Last week Flintshire County Council announced yet another change with part of Wepre Lane in Connah’s Quay reverting back to a 30mph speed limit from 4^th September.

As we approach the third anniversary of the introduction of the policy Mr Rowlands, a long-time critic of the default 20mph speed limit, said the whole exercise had been a shambles.

He said:

“I said at the time this unpopular policy was a ludicrous decision and the views of the public were not taken into consideration.  Despite over half a million people signing a petition against the introduction the Welsh Government went ahead.

“It is almost three years since this ridiculous legislation was passed and councils are still consulting and changing roads back from 30mph to 20mph. It is becoming increasingly baffling for motorists.

“The whole exercise has been a complete and utter waste of time and money and the previous Labour Welsh Government should never have introduced this default speed limit.

“Local authorities are still having to clear up the mess the former Welsh Government created and unfortunately some councils are still refusing to take notice of what local people have to say in regard to the roads in their area.

“It has cost a fortune to implement this law and even more money to change roads back. It is crazy and the funds should have been spent where needed on the NHS, education and public services.”
