Queen’s School recognised for Geography excellence

The Queen’s School in Chester has once again been awarded the Secondary Geography Quality Mark – the only school in the city to hold the accolade.

The prestigious award from the Geographical Association recognises the quality of learning, teaching, leadership and curriculum development across the Queen’s school’s geographical provision.

The fact that The Queen’s School remains the only school in Chester to hold the award is testament to the staff and the student aspirations.

Head of Geography, Miss Sarah Aldridge said “I am delighted to see that our work in providing an engaging curriculum has been recognised. I am looking forward to continuing to inspire our students to learn more about the world around them.”

To achieve the SGQM involves a rigorous moderation process and the school was praised for:

• The variety of topics taught which develop an understanding of the physical and human world and instils global responsibility.

• The way in which lessons have been designed to be student led and involving an array of activities to make learning memorable and accessible for all.

• The way students are empowered to use geographical data to enhance their understanding of the world.

• The effective use of the outside environment to support the students learning

Headmistress Mrs Sue Wallace-Woodroffe said: “To see the school once again externally endorsed for the phenomenal work that goes on in our Geography department is testament to our superb staff who go above and beyond to inspire the girls. Every year pupils are involved in a range of activities in and outside the classroom to ignite a love of the subject with many girls choosing to further their knowledge at university. I would like to congratulate the Geography department for continuing to provide an award winning education to our girls.”

100% of geography A-level grades were A*-B with all but one grade at A*/A. At GCSE 94% of grades were 9-6 (A*-B) with 61% at 9/8 (A*).

Parents and students can find out more about the award winning Geography department at the forthcoming Open Morning on Saturday 10 October.
