Next Concert by Chester Philharmonic Orchestra

Chester Philharmonic Orchestra is pleased to announce our next concert with new conductor Jon Malaxetxebarria on Saturday 1st July 2023.

We will be playing at St. Mary’s Without the Walls in Handbridge, Chester as the Chester Mystery Plays are taking place in our normal concert venue this summer. Jon will be leading the orchestra through an exciting programme including pieces by Rossini, Prokofiev, and Mendelssohn.

Prokofiev’s piece, Peter and the Wolf Op 67 was written in 1936 and is described as a symphonic fairy tale for children. The narrator tells a children's story whilst the orchestra illustrates it by using different instruments that represent each character in the story. It is Prokofiev’s most frequently performed works.

Rossini’s work The Italian Girl in Algiers was composed in typical Rossini fashion: quickly! The composer produced the work in less than a month. In February 1817, it became the first Rossini opera to be performed in Paris where he eventually resided.

Felix Mendelssohn wrote A Midsummer Night’s Dream Overture when he was just 17 years old. He included many special effects that are in keeping with Shakespeare’s original play, including the scuttling feet of fairies and the braying of poor Bottom when he is turned into an ass.

Mendelssohn’s Symphony No.4 ‘Italian’ was written soon after the young composer’s visit to Italy. The buoyant and optimistic mood at the beginning bears all the hallmarks of a happy man eager to make his mark on the world. On one level, the symphony is not particularly Italian, instead the work is an expression of his travels in Italy through music.

Chester Philharmonic Orchestra is one of the North West England’s premier nonprofessional orchestras. More details of this next concert and all upcoming concerts can be found on the orchestra’s new website.
