Match Preview: Colwyn Bay v Chester FC

Chester FC return to action in midweek with a trip to Colwyn Bay for a fourth test of the pre-season.

Saturday saw a first game at the Deva in 80 days as Calum McIntyre’s side were defeated by Salford City.

Our most recent clash with the Seagulls was a stunning 5-1 victory on the way to the National League North title in March 2013.

A Tony Gray hat-trick, one from Matty McGinn and a late finish from Antoni Sarcevic secured all three points at the Blue Turtle Arena.

The Opposition

Unlike when we last faced the club, Colwyn Bay now ply their trade in the Welsh football pyramid and were promoted to the Cymru Premier for the 25/26 campaign.

The change occurred following an 11th-placed finish in the NPL Division One West in 2019, the club’s last in the English leagues.

The Bay have seen promotions from the Cymru North in both the 22/23 and 24/25 campaigns, with a troubled maiden season in the Welsh Premier that culminated in relegation in 2024.

The Gaffer

Michael Wilde is the man in the dugout in North Wales and will be a familiar name to Blues fans.

The 41-year-old was appointed last summer and made an immediate impact as he led the team to Cymru North success by a three point margin from Airbus UK.

Wilde featured 72 times for the Seals between 2010-12 and scored on 46 occasions, with 36 of them coming en route to the Evo-Stik Division One North title.

The gaffer was chosen in the Blues’ team of the decade in 2020 after his unbelievable exploits in a Chester shirt.

Tuesday fixtures will kick off at 19:30 at Llanelian Road – Llanelian Rd, Old Colwyn, Colwyn Bay LL29 8UN.

The ground holds a capacity of 3,000 spectators, with 1,850 seated.

Travel

By car – Follow the A55 from Chester along the North Welsh coast until junction 22. This will lead on to Llanelian Road and the ground will be found on the right-hand side.

By train – The direct service from Chester to Colwyn Bay railway station takes approximately 45 minutes. There are an average of three outbound services an hour with an inbound service at 22:11. The railway station in Colwyn Bay is 1.8 miles from the Blue Turtle Arena.
