Against the Grain, Chester's popular and highly regarded local theatre company, are back this October with their latest production, the fascinating, real life tale of the relationship between Agatha Christie and the much-loved, comic actress, Margaret Rutherford - 'Murder, Margaret and Me', by Philip Meeks.
Set in 1960, we meet Margaret and Agatha just as Margaret has been approached to star as Agatha's popular sleuth, Miss Marple, in 'Murder, She Said', the character's first big screen outing.
The production is directed by Stuart Evans and Mark Newman. As Stuart explains:
"The play is set in 1960 and Margaret – described as 'the funniest woman alive’ - has been approached by MGM to play Miss Marple in ‘Murder, She Said’, the first big screen appearance of Agatha's famous amateur consultant detective. But we soon find out that Margaret is reluctant to play the part. Nor does does Agatha particularly want her to. Both have their reasons - but what are they?"
Mark adds:
"So begins a game of cat and mouse where each try to discover the other’s motives, little suspecting the secrets they both hide, and which have remained long buried. Joining these two household names on stage is the enigmatic character of The Spinster, who observes and encourages them to help each other to come to terms with the skeletons in their cupboards, and watches them form an unlikely friendship".
'Murder, Margaret and Me' sees Against the Grain back in action after their highly successful production of Ben Elton's 'Silly Cow' in February, and includes two of that cast - Sally Dillon as Mrs Christie and Marian Newman as Miss Rutherford. Joining them as The Spinster is AtG regular, Fiona Wheatcroft, who returns after her appearance in 'A Delicate Balance' last year.
Speaking of her character, Marian says:
"It's quite a lot of responsibility playing a real person, especially one who was so widely known and loved. She's certainly different to the character I played in 'Silly Cow' too! But it's also been a lot of fun getting to know her and learn more about her fascinating, hidden past."
‘Murder, Margaret and Me’ is being performed at St Mary’s Creative Space, Chester, from 13th – 17th October.
