Local patient safety initiative recognised for national award

The Patient Safety Improvement team at Cheshire and Wirral Partnership (CWP) NHS Foundation Trust has been shortlisted for a prestigious Patient Safety Award.

CWP been recognised for an innovative new Safety Management System which measures and monitors patient safety, as well as proactively taking steps to improve the Trust’s approach to ensuring a safe care environment. Already recognised as ‘outstanding for caring’ by the Care Quality Commission, the initiative is a further step to put patient safety first.

The new system follows evidence-based guidance published by the Health Foundation and has led to the team being recognised at the HSJ Patient Safety Awards – due to be held at Manchester Central on Monday 20 September. They are shortlisted in the ‘Patient Safety Team of the Year’ category.

David Wood, associate director of safe services, explains: “I am immensely proud of the work that the Patient Safety Improvement Team have done and continue to do to support our clinical teams in celebrating all the excellent work they do. Our focus on striving for continuous improvement so that we can be the best we can be in providing safe services is a testament to the commitment of the Patient Safety Improvement Team and all the clinical teams they work with. 

“To be shortlisted as finalists against strong competition nationally is very much a recognition of everyone’s hard work at CWP in ensuring patient safety is our priority.”

CWP medical director, Dr Anushta Sivananthan, said: “At CWP, we are always striving to ensure our care is as compassionate, effective and safe as possible. On behalf of the Trust I congratulate our patient safety improvement team on their recognition at this prestigious event.”
