Justin Madders MP has welcomed a £1 billion government package to support electric vans and trucks, saying it should boost demand for vehicles built in Ellesmere Port.
The funding will help businesses transition to electric fleets, with up to £2,500 off compact electric vans built locally by Stellantis, larger grants for bigger vans and trucks and support for depot charging infrastructure.
More than 1,000 workers are employed at the Ellesmere Port plant, which produces electric vans for brands within the Stellantis group, including Vauxhall/Opel, Peugeot, Citroën and Fiat.
Electric vans made at the site are already in use in the community, including by Royal Mail at Ellesmere Port Delivery Office, which the MP saw on a recent visit.
Mr Madders, who represents Ellesmere Port & Bromborough, said:
“This is great news for Ellesmere Port.
“The Government’s £1 billion package will help businesses make the switch to electric vehicles — cutting costs, supporting charging infrastructure and helping accelerate the move to cleaner transport.
“This action tackles the barriers businesses face and has the potential to drive demand for vehicles made right here — backing jobs and strengthening our local economy.”
Earlier this year, he attended the Manchester Motor Show, where the Ellesmere Port-built Vauxhall Combo-e was showcased.
The Government investment in electric vans and trucks has also been welcomed by Stellantis, with representatives saying the increased support will help businesses switch to electric fleets and boost confidence in zero-emission vans.
