Samantha Dixon, Member of Parliament for Chester North and Neston, has celebrated World Book Day by visiting local schools and libraries as part of her commitment to visit every library across the constituency during the National Year of Reading.
Over recent weeks, Samantha has visited Blacon Library and met pupils at Blacon High School and Grosvenor Park Academy, reading with children and speaking about the importance of developing a lifelong love of books. She is set to visit Neston Library and Willaston Primary School later this week, with further visits planned throughout the year.
The visits form part of the Government-backed National Year of Reading, delivered in partnership with the National Literacy Trust. The campaign, titled ‘Go All In’, aims to tackle the decline in reading for pleasure among young people. Currently, just one in three children aged 8-18 say they enjoy reading in their spare time.
The Government’s wider literacy drive includes a new mandatory reading test for Year 8 pupils to identify those who need additional support, significant investment in reading and writing teaching, and measures to boost access to books in primary schools.
Locally, Cheshire West and Chester Council’s Library Services are inviting everyone to discover how reading can unlock new passions, from music and baking to sci-fi and fiction. With free access to books, eBooks, eAudiobooks, and more, the library offers something for everyone.
Throughout the year, different themes will be highlighted, including World Book Day, the Summer Reading Challenge, and storytime events for younger children. Joining the library is free and easy, with members also enjoying access to Wi-Fi, computers, and even iPads to borrow. Visit your local library today to start exploring and make the most of the National Year of Reading.
Speaking about the National Year of Reading, Samantha Dixon MP said:
“Reading has always been something I’ve loved. It opens up opportunities, sparks imagination and builds confidence that lasts a lifetime.
“We are incredibly lucky to have such brilliant libraries across Chester North and Neston, supported by the fantastic team at Cheshire West and Chester Libraries. They are at the heart of our communities.
“I’ve thoroughly enjoyed visiting schools and libraries to mark World Book Day and the start of the National Year of Reading, reading with pupils and seeing first-hand the enthusiasm so many young people have for books.
“I’m committed to visiting every single library in our constituency over the coming year because I want to champion the vital role they play. I’m looking forward to meeting even more children, families and volunteers in the months ahead.
“I would encourage everyone to pick up a book, sign up for a library card if you don’t already have one, and visit your local library. Reading really does unlock so much and this year is a brilliant opportunity for all of us to rediscover that. Happy World Book Day to everyone across Chester North and Neston.”
The National Year of Reading will feature events and activities throughout 2026, bringing together families, schools, libraries, businesses and volunteers to put reading back at the heart of everyday life.
