Hundreds of Children a day enjoy Flintshire’s Summer Playscheme

More than 600 children a day are taking part in Flintshire’s popular Summer Playscheme, with places still available for the remainder of the holidays.

The free Summer Playscheme provides children with safe, inclusive and engaging play opportunities throughout the summer break. Running across 49 sites, the programme offers sessions led by trained playworkers, helping children to stay active and make friends while enjoying a wide range of creative play experiences.

Many sites continue throughout the full six weeks, while other locations operate during either weeks 1-3 or weeks 4-6, meaning there is still time to get involved.

Activities vary from site to site but include loose parts play, arts and crafts, and sports games. All Playschemes allow children to lead on their own play, allowing them the opportunity for freely chosen, personally directed and intrinsically motivated play.

Flintshire County Council has secured funding through the Welsh Government Emergency Food Aid Fund to provide meals for children attending sessions in locations with higher levels of deprivation, as well as snacks across all sites, helping to support families through the summer holiday period.

Councillor Mared Eastwood, Cabinet Member for Education, Welsh Language, Culture and Leisure, said:

“It is fantastic to see so many children benefitting from this year’s Summer Playscheme. The programme is a really important part of the summer holidays for many families, providing free opportunities for children to play and socialise.

“The Playscheme gives children the chance to play and socialise, building confidence and developing new friendships while making the most of the summer sunshine. I would urge local families to get their children booked in if they haven’t already.”
