GOLF PROJECT IS BIG HIT WITH PETTY POOL LEARNERS

A golf project designed to improve physical and mental wellbeing for young people with learning disabilities and difficulties in Cheshire has been hailed a success.

So far over 60 learners from Petty Pool Vocational College in Sandiway have attended the ‘Swing Into Golf’ sessions with pro golfer Adam Powell at Hartford Golf club.

The specialist programme, which is spread over four weeks, provided learners with training on putting and time on the driving range, leading up to a session on the golf course.

PGA Professional Adam Powell comments:

“It’s been amazing to work with the students of Petty Pool College. The progression from session one to session four has been remarkable to watch and to see the students confidence grow not only in themselves but in a new environment and sport. It’s the highlight of my working week.”

Petty Pool Curriculum Manager Emma Myles has co-ordinated the enrichment activity. She says,

“"Our learners have really been benefiting from the opportunity to develop not only their golf skills and techniques, but build on positive relationships with their peers and naturally develop their communication skills. Not only do they enjoy engaging in the golfing sessions lead by professional golfer Adam, but they have also loved engaging with their local community."

The partnership project has been funded by Sport England and Active Cheshire. Strategic Lead for Partnerships and Workforce at Active Cheshire, James Self, comments:

“It has been great to see and hear how this programme between Petty Pool College and Hartford Golf Club supported through the Sport England Children and Young People funding has progressed.  The programme is not only providing physical but also many social development opportunities and benefits for all the young people involved.  There has been lots of rich learnings from all involved in the programme that can be shared across the sector.  I’d like to thank both Petty Pool and Hartford Golf Club for providing the opportunity for these young people who face inequalities to accessing sport and physical activity with the opportunity to be more physically active, more often helping them to live happier and healthier lives.  We hope this partnership and programme can continue for future students and wider.”

It's hoped that the college can secure funding to continue the project in partnership with Hartford Golf Club.

Manager, Jennifer Barnes comments:

“It’s an absolute pleasure welcoming the Petty Pool students and staff to the golf club each week. We’ve enjoyed seeing the students learn a new sport and grow in confidence on the adventure golf course, driving range and course. Following the golf, the students have enjoyed refreshments in the club house to share their golfing stories! We hope they continue with their golfing journey as they’re some great, young golfers amongst them.”
