Dee Point Primary School Plant a Tree for the Jubilee

Blacon’s Dee Point Primary is one of 70 primary schools across the country chosen to plant a tree to celebrate Her Majesty The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022.

The Queen’s Green Canopy (QGC) is a unique tree planting initiative created to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022 inviting people across the country to ‘Plant a Tree for the Jubilee’. 

The QGC is gifting 70 Celebration Trees to selected primary schools in cities across the UK to highlight the educational aspects of trees and the significance of giving young people access to nature. 

The Lord-Lieutenant, Lady Redmond MBE, joined head teacher Dave Williams on Tuesday (5 October) for the planting ceremony.  Also present were Councillor Louise Gittins, Leader of Cheshire West and Chester Council,  The Lord Mayor of Chester, Councillor Martyn Delaney, the Member of Parliament, Chris Matheson MP and Michelle Whalley of The Mersey Forest. Councillors Sheila Little and Carol Graham also attended.

The school choir  and musical theatre group ‘Rewind’ launched the event followed by the planting ceremony by the children. 

The Lord-Lieutenant, Lady Redmond MBE said: “We are delighted that Dee Point Primary School in Blacon has been chosen to receive a Celebration Tree and Cheshire will be part of the national Green Canopy”. 

Councillor Louise Gittins, Leader of Cheshire West and Chester Council said: “For one of our Cheshire schools to be chosen to receive one of the celebratory trees and to be part of this significant event to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee next year is an honour for our borough”

“Planting this special tree is one of the first of many activities leading up to the Platinum Jubilee Weekend in June next year.” 

The Mersey Forest, the areas local Community Forest, supported Dee Point Primary School with their application to the Queen’s Green Canopy programme, including advice and guidance on planting and caring for the tree. 

Michelle Whalley, from The Mersey Forest, said: “It’s great to see pupils at Dee Point Primary School getting involved with the planting of this special tree. We work with many schools across the area, providing pupils with the opportunity to plant trees on their school site and learn about the importance of trees, both for the environment and for our health and wellbeing.”
