Cheshire West and Chester Council has been awarded £5,874,580, over the next four years, to encourage more people to walk, wheel and cycle by Active Travel England (ATE).
The grant from the Department for Transport is part of a national £616 million investment to help accelerate walking, wheeling and cycling schemes across the country, to tackle the climate emergency and make roads safer for everyone.
The Council made a submission and supporting evidence to ATE in June this year and was told this week that the moderated rating for the authority has been maintained at Level 2.
The Council’s Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Transport and Highways, Councillor Karen Shore said:
“We’re delighted our ATE funding level has been maintained, it will continue our long-term ambitions to encourage more journeys to be made in a more sustainable way.
“We want to continue to expand our walking and cycling networks across the borough, linking with public transport services.
“Overall ATE assessors were impressed by the general quality of our submissions and the effort and enthusiasm of council officers to improve local capability and performance, often in very challenging circumstances.”
