Closure needed at Aldford Bridge to repair flood damage

A major scheme of works to the repair flood-damaged Aldford Bridge will take place from Monday 10 May to Friday 11 June 2021.

The road will be closed between 9:15am to 2:45pm each day, Monday to Friday, to allow the rebuilding the bridge parapet.  Pedestrian and cyclist access will be maintained during the daily closures.

During severe flooding in January 2021, large sections of sandstone blocks from the Grade II listed Bridge were washed into the Brook.  To allow the bridge to reopen, temporary concrete barriers were installed across the bridge, which narrowed the road and required the installation of four-way traffic signals.

The Council’s Director of Environment and Communities, Maria Byrne said: “In early April, once the water levels were low enough, a four day road closure was arranged to allow divers, with the aid of a crane, to remove the heavy sandstone parapet blocks from the Brook.

“The Council apologies for any inconvenience caused by these closures and thank local residents for their patience and support while we repair this Grade II listed bridge.”
