Leaders from Hoole Baptist Church and local charity, the Crossroads Community Hub will be welcoming refugees in the area to a Community BBQ to show hospitality not hostility.
A cup of tea or a friendly meal are symbols of warmth and welcome across the world – making it an ideal way to take a stand against the Bill.
Orange bunting and balloons will be hung up and around the Hub as a symbol of welcome and support for refugees.
Andy Glover said: “At our best, we are welcoming and kind to those facing difficult times. But this bill will punish people based simply on how they arrived here, not whether they need protection. Even people from Afghanistan, Syria and Sudan will face detention and deportation.
The Illegal Migration Bill is currently making its way through Parliament and proposes to strip people fleeing war and persecution of their right to seek safety in the UK based simply on how they came here. These people would instead be subject to detention while arrangements are made to remove them to another country. This will mean even children who are seeking safety here will be detained.
The Hospitality Not Hostility event in Chester is part of a nationwide action being organised by campaign coalition Together With Refugees. The coalition is calling for a more effective, fair and humane approach to the UK’s refugee system that protects rather than punishes refugees; stands up for the UN Refugee Convention; and provides alternatives to dangerous journeys.
