The Chester & Wirral Football League fell silent on Saturday to pay a poignant tribute to league President John Davies, following his passing at the age of 79. The pre-match tributes across the division honoured a man who dedicated over half a century to grassroots football, a journey that began on the pitch for Hoole FC in the 1960s and 70s before he transitioned into the boardroom as Club Secretary.

In 1975, he joined the league committee, marking the start of a legendary administrative career. As Fixture Secretary from 1985 until the early 2000s, John masterminded the league's scheduling through the demanding pre-digital era without mobile phones or emails. He later served as League Chairman (1998–2000), Vice Chairman for over two decades, and was named League President in 2009. Made a Life Member in 1995, John’s immense impact was recognized nationally when the Cheshire FA presented him with The FA’s 50 Years Long Service Award. League Chairman David Glynn Evans led the tributes, describing John as "a lovely person and a fantastic servant" who will be greatly missed, with the thoughts of the local football community remaining with his wife, Liz, and his family.

Following the tributes, the weekend's local action kicked off under the Friday night lights in the CWFL Queensferry Sports Premier Division, where a relentless New Brighton Riptide made it three wins from three. They ran out 4-2 winners in an entertaining clash against M.U.C. United, powered by a clinical Leighton Clarke brace alongside strikes from Oscar Sergeant and Jamie Payne. Jamil Mohamed claimed both consolations for the beaten visitors. Elsewhere in the division, a solitary Joe Henry effort was enough to grant Blacon Youth Reserves a narrow 1-0 victory over Handbridge.

Over in the CWFL Tarvin Precision Vets Championship Friday fixtures, Neston Nomads secured all three points by edging past West Kirby Vets 2-1, courtesy of goals from Liam Jeacock and Nick Jones, which cancelled out David Cowie’s reply.

Saturday's Queens Ferry Sports Premier Division card served up an absolute classic as Whitegate United and Elton JFC shared the spoils in a breathless 4-4 draw. Jim King-Mcgee was the undisputed star of the show with a magnificent hat-trick for Elton, complemented by a James Heatley strike. However, Whitegate fought back with a shared goalscoring responsibility as Will Reid, Anthony Reid, Sam Eves, and Tom Carney all found the back of the net. Meanwhile, FC Farndon showed plenty of encouraging signs but ultimately left empty-handed in a 3-0 defeat away at Chester Nomads 3rds, who coasted to victory through goals from Tim Ashbrook, Shaun Shrigley, and Trey Lattie.

The CWFL Olympic Trophies Championship produced a goal-fest across a packed schedule. Pace-setters Runcorn Sports Development maintained their flawless start, thumping West Kirby United 5-1 on their own turf as Carl Phillips, Alex Rhodes, Ryan Bazley, Jorje Orme, and Jack Hunter all breached the hosts' defense. Poulton Vics lost valuable ground at the summit, held to a 2-2 draw by a resilient West Kirby U18 Black. Alfie Naylor and Kyle Campbell-Lea struck for the Vics, but Lew Corrigan and Ollie Coleman hit back to force the stalemate.

An Ellis Blenkinsop double and a Joseph Flynn finish ensured Wallasey Village kicked off their campaign in perfect fashion with a 3-0 shutout of Hoole Rovers.

Willaston were involved in a nine-goal thriller, emerging 6-3 victors over Chester Nomads Development thanks to a heroic Tom Marrs hat-trick, with Scott Tebb, Joel Curtis, and Dan Hooke adding the gloss. Nick Crouch, Adam Butt, and Bobby Bain provided the replies in a losing effort.

The Grange and West Kirby U23 could not be separated in an entertaining 3-3 draw, with Joey Hancox netting twice and Sam Treaner scoring the other for the hosts. In the CWFL Tarvin Precision Vets Premier Division, Higher Bebington Kelma and Birkenhead Vets both laid down markers with dominant away victories to sit joint-top of the table. Kelma hit Hartford for six without reply, spearheaded by a Craig Cairns hat-trick and further goals from JP Wheadon, Johnny Summers, and Jason Ashworth.

Birkenhead FC matched the three points with a comprehensive 3-0 win away at Chester Nomads Vets, lightened by a Mark Macnoon brace and a Craig Griffiths goal. Sefton enjoyed an equally emphatic afternoon on the road, dispatching Ellesmere Port Red Lions 7-1. Finally, in the Vets Championship, the returning Queens Park Vets opened their account in style by defeating Upton JFC Vets 3-1, inspired by a Matty O'Shea double and a Dean Thomas strike. To close out the weekend's review, goals from Adam Horricks and Adam Newbolt secured a comfortable 2-0 victory for Frodsham over Crew Vets.
