CFC Women's Team Mid-Season Review

Ahead of Chester FC Women’s first action of 2026, Kalvin Williams has offered a mid-season review on his side’s campaign to date.

The Blues currently sit fourth in the NWWRL Division One South, having played nine of their overall league schedule of 18 fixtures, with a record of 18 points so far. 14 points off league leaders Nantwich Town, but with four games in hand, Kalvin believes his side can push towards the summit come the end of the season.

Williams’ side have kicked on of late after a run of one win in five outings to start the campaign, and are now heading into the New Year after four-straight victories, ahead of a clash with Macclesfield in East Cheshire next Sunday.

Reflecting on the Blues’ season so far, Kalvin said:

“Overall it’s been really positive. It was a fairly tough start, but full credit must go to the players as they’ve bounced back brilliantly with our current four-match winning run. In that time, we’ve scored 17 and only conceded two, so it was a really positive run.

“I think the quality has always been there, it’s just been the case that results have improved as the group have come back together.”

“Throughout the season I think the group have matured. After our start we looked at what we did right and where we could’ve improved, so I think we’ve learnt from our mistakes and that pointed us in the right direction. We have to remember that more of the group have got back together as the season’s gone on, as there was periods when we were missing key players through things like holidays, illnesses, and work commitments, which made it tough. Since then, we’ve been able to bring a level of consistency and we’ve done really well.

“I think the quality has always been there, it’s just been the case that results have improved as the group have come back together. New signings have helped, but players have also been asked to do different jobs and they’ve excelled at that. Everyone has took on board new information and I’m pleased with how much we’ve progressed since August.”

On specific highlights so far this campaign, Kalvin added: “The biggest one for myself was going to Runcorn away and picking up three points. That was the toughest test that we’ve passed so far, as we’ve notoriously struggled when we’ve gone there in the past. The first game of the season too, at home to Runcorn, to come back from 3-1 down after 81 minutes to win 5-3, that was a special day.”

“We just have to focus on ourselves, as if we win our games in hand we go two points behind them, so it could get really exciting come the end of the season.”

Due to various postponements, the Blues have played just one league game at home since August, which has proved a frustration for the boss:

“It’s been really tough. We’ve now got to look at the plus-side of it, we still have seven home games to go, including one in the cup against Atherton LR. Hopefully that run will see us bring our away form to the Deva and build some momentum towards the end of the season. That will give us the best chance to try and chase down Nantwich at the top of the league.

“I said from day one to the group that Nantwich will be the team to beat. They’ve got good a manager, a good group, and they’ve recruited really well. We just have to focus on ourselves, as if we win our games in hand we go two points behind them, so it could get really exciting come the end of the season.

“The fact that there is just one promotion spot is frustrating, and since I’ve been at the club it’s always been the case that one team has it almost wrapped up by Christmas. That’s not the case this year so it gives everyone a chance to fight going into the business end of the season. All we can do is try to put the pressure on and see what happens.”
