A Shaquile Coulthirst hat-trick earned all three points for Peterborough Sports this afternoon in their game against Chester FC.
Pat Jones had the first effort of the contest after he combined well with Declan Weeks from a short corner routine, but the number 18 fired comfortably over the bar from the edge of the area.
The Turbines took the lead in the 17th minute, when a long ball dropped to the feet of Coulthirst who managed to prod home from close-range.
The opening period was one of limited goalmouth action at PIMS Park, as both sides battled in tough conditions.
Sam McLintock fired comfortably wide as the half progressed past the 30 minute-mark, before Connor Wood had the final opportunity before the interval for the hosts but his strike flew over the top.
Mustapha Carayol went close immediately following the restart but his drilled effort slid wide of the far post.
The contest was once again scrappy with a lack of clear-cut opportunities early in the second period, before Carayol almost doubled the lead just before the hour-mark, but his drilled effort flew just wide of the post.
Elliott Whitehouse set up Coulthirst’s second of the afternoon in the 71st minute, as his cross found the experienced forward who was left with a simple finish.
The Turbines had a third seven minutes later, as the ball dropped to Coulthirst inside the area before he fired into the back of the net from close-range.
It’s a quick turnaround for the Blues this week as we travel to Marine on Tuesday evening.
