Blues Match Preview: Peterborough Sports v Chester FC

Chester FC go in search of a seventh successive victory on Saturday, with a trip to Cambridgeshire for a clash against Peterborough Sports.

The reverse fixture between the pair back in August witnessed a comfortable 3-0 success for Calum McIntyre’s side, as goals from Charlie Caton, Harrison Burke and Tom Peers were enough to defeat the Turbines.

Our most recent trip to PIMS Park resulted in a 1-1 draw in February 2024, as a late Elliott Whitehouse penalty cancelled out a strike from Josh Cammon.

The Seals come into this contest after a dominant 3-0 victory over Radcliffe on Tuesday night, courtesy of a brace from Tom Peers and a long range strike from Declan Weeks.

It was a result that consolidated our position as league leaders, with Scunthorpe United just one point behind after they grabbed a 2-0 win over Needham Market in midweek.

The Opposition

Sports come into the contest in a rich vein of form, with just two defeats in their last 14 encounters, but they did fall to a 1-0 defeat to Hereford on Tuesday night.

The Turbines sit just inside the top half after 28 contests, seven points adrift of the play-offs but 13 points clear of the bottom four.

Prior to the loss in midweek, the club had won three out of their last four, with victories on the road at Needham Market and Buxton, alongside an impressive home success over King’s Lynn Town.

The Cambridgeshire-based side endured a meteoric rise to this level between 2015-2022, with four promotions from the 10th tier to the sixth tier in seven years, before two mid-table finishes in their first two seasons in the National League North.

The Gaffers

Peterborough Sports are joint-managed by Luke Steele and Michael Gash, who are in the early stages of their coaching endeavours after they both had extensive playing careers.

Steele started in the Peterborough United academy before he put pen to paper with Manchester United in 2002, but he failed to register an appearance for the Red Devils.

The shot-stopper featured on 227 occasions for Barnsley, but also had a spell at Panathinaikos in the Greek Super League between 2014-2017.

Despite his management duties, Gash has made 24 appearances in defence this season, after he played as a striker for the majority of his career.

The 38-year-old’s most notable stints came at Cambridge United, York City and King’s Lynn Town.

One To Watch

Michael Gyasi is the Turbines’ top scorer so far this campaign with eight goals, after he departed Boston United last summer.

The 24-year-old has netted at crucial times in recent weeks, with goals in the wins over Warrington Town, Needham Market and King’s Lynn Town.

Gyasi began his career in the Leicester City academy, but has since starred for a plethora of clubs, including Chesterfield, Gloucester City and Altrincham.
